Andy Burnham is in the process of appointing his cabinet after entering Downing Street as Britain’s new prime minister.
Burnham was formally appointed by King Charles at Buckingham Palace on Monday afternoon, succeeding Keir Starmer, who resigned as Labour leader last month.
Speaking outside No 10 in his first address as prime minister, Burnham promised to “make this moment a circuit breaker for Britain” and to bring forward “the biggest changes in the last 40 years, a new political model and a new economic model”.
The reshuffle represents a sweeping clear-out of ministers closely associated with the Starmer government. Rachel Reeves has left as chancellor, David Lammy has departed as deputy prime minister and justice secretary, and housing secretary Steve Reed and business secretary Peter Kyle have also left government.
John Healey has been appointed as chancellor of the exchequer, Ed Miliband as foreign secretary and Shabana Mahmood has been retained as home secretary.
Burnham has also elevated key allies including Louise Haigh (chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster) and Anneliese Midgley (chief whip).
