Ian Byrne is the Labour MP for Liverpool West Derby, having first been elected in the 2019 General Election with a massive majority of 29,984.
The constituency of Liverpool west Derby contains the north west of the city of Liverpool covering the areas of West Derby, Croxteth, Norris Green, Tuebrook and Stoneycroft. Although the seat was won by the Conservatives between 1950 and 1964, this has since become one of the safest Labour seats in the UK, with three out of four voters backing Labour in 2019.
Born in 1972, Byrne worked as a trade union organiser for Unite before being elected to Parliament. Having formerly worked in the printing industry, he also worked as a taxi driver whilst studying at the Open University.
Having worked for fellow Liverpool MP, Dan Carden, before being elected to Parliament, Byrne is considered as being on the left of the Labour Party.
Byrne has previously attracted a great deal of controversy for a range of offensive comments that he is alleged to have made online before becoming an MP. These related variously to Boris Johnson’s mother and Jimmy Saville, the Scottish entrepreneur Michelle Mone, the Conservative MP Esther McVey, and Prince William. He has subsequently apologised.
A keen supporter of Liverpool Football Club, he was present at the Hillsborough disaster where his father was injured. He is a member of the management committee, Spirit of Shankly, which promotes the interests of football supporters.
