Is nuclear warfare a real threat?

During a general debate in the Commons about the current situation in Ukraine, the issue of nuclear warfare was raised. Members of the House discussed whether the threat was simply just that, or whether the UK and other NATO members need to prepare for it to become a reality.

Chris Bryant, MP for Rhondda said that we should be turning our attention away from the possibilities of a future event, and towards “a type of warfare that Putin is using against us today: cyber”. He claimed that the threat of nuclear warfare was distracting from the current issue of compromised cyber security that we have in the UK and across Europe.

Iain Duncan Smith and Liam Fox both argued that this was not just a petty threat, and that it must be taken seriously by the government. Duncan Smith stressed the importance of standing by Ukraine’s side, in the event of a nuclear escalation.
