Helen Morgan calls for local consent on fracking

Speaking in Westminster Hall on Tuesday, Liberal Democrat MP Helen Morgan called for a local approach to the issue of fracking.

She said: “We must prevent the government from making yet another U-turn. There’s no mandate for fracking. It is outlawed in the manifesto of every major party in 2019. Only a tiny minority appear to believe there is a benefit”.

She recounted the 2019 manifesto commitments on fracking for each major party: “‘Ban fracking for good’ in the Liberal Democrat Manifesto; ‘permanently ban fracking’ in the Labour Party Manifesto; ‘we will not support fracking in the Conservative Party Manifesto’; and ‘Ban fracking and other unconventional forms of fossil fuel extraction’ in the Green Party Manifesto”.

Morgan continued: “90% of the electorate voted for one of these parties. It’s clear that people don’t want it”.
