Bryant calls for legislation to allow for same-sex marriage in the Church of England

In business questions today, Labour MP Sir Chris Bryant suggested the House could legislate to push the Church of England into allowing same sex marriages to be conducted by parishes and clergy who so wish.

Sir Chris said: “Would she allow time as leader of the House for legislation to push the Church of England into allowing same sex marriages to be conducted by parishes and clergy who want to do that, if Synod doesn’t act?”.

Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt responded: “I know there are a lot of people who will say and ask, why are we concerned about such matters in this place? It is it is surely not a matter for us. It is a matter for the church. But I would I would just point to the very large number of letters that we all receive, not just from parishioners, but also members of the clergy as well”.
