Shell tax rebates near $750m for decommissioning North Sea oil field

London, 20 March 2024 – Reacting to the news that Shell has disclosed nearly $750 million of tax rebates from the UK government for decommissioning North Sea oil fields, Philip Evans, Campaigner at Greenpeace UK, said: “This is yet another example of the absurdity of the UK government’s energy policy. The government provides polluters like Shell with subsidies, but when it comes to cleaning up their mess – inadequately at that – the taxpayer foots the bill.

“The shower of tax breaks received by fossil fuel companies line the pockets of oil bosses and shareholders while doing nothing to improve our energy security or lower household bills. We need to start diverting these huge subsidies away from this industry and instead use it to invest in a just transition at home and in countries on the frontline of the climate crisis.”
