Prentis: Labour needs “timetable for change”

The general secretary of public sector union Unison has called for a change of Labour leader.

Should Labour win an historic third term of power at the next election, Dave Prentis urged Tony Blair to make way for his Chancellor, Gordon Brown.

Mr Blair has pledged to see out a third term of office but not a fourth.

In an interview with The Daily Record newspaper, Mr Prentis accused Mr Blair of reneging on a deal to step aside for Mr Brown, claiming something “dishonourable” has happened between the men.

Mr Blair has rejected claims that he told Mr Brown he would eventually make way, telling journalists “you don’t do deals over jobs like this”.

Mr Prentis said: “There comes a time when there will be a change of leader.

“It is right we do renew ourselves.

“I think we do need a real timetable for changeover.”

Meanwhile, in a poll for The Daily Record, six out of ten Scottish voters said they would vote Labour if Scottish Mr Brown were leader, compared to 48 per cent with Mr Blair at the helm.
