Driver killed in M62 tanker plunge

One person has died and several injured after a tanker fell off a flyover on the M62.

The tanker plummeted at least 20ft onto a major traffic island on the Manchester ring road, killing the driver and landing in the path of two cars and a lorry.

It is believed that the tanker was carrying bitumen, but the cargo appears to be safe.

The incident occurred at around 0900 BST this morning at Simister, where the M62 merges with the M60 and the M66.

The motorway has been closed clockwise from Junction 17 of the M60 onwards. Traffic has been badly affected in the area and motorists are being advised to avoid it.

Occupants of the other three vehicles involved suffered minor injuries.

Accident investigators are at the scene and are trying to establish how the crash happened.
