Backbench MP blasts govt for North Sea gas limits amid energy crisis

Conservative MP John Redwood has called on the government to allow more gas permits in the North Sea to tackle the ongoing energy crisis.

He said via Twitter on Thursday: “Either bill payers or taxpayers are going to have to pay a lot more for gas. The government should allow the industry to produce more from the North Sea by granting more permits to ease future shortages.

He went on: “Whilst we await a bigger switch away from fossil fuels we need enough gas and oil to keep the lights on and prices affordable. The UK should encourage more home production to ease transition to a more electric future.”

This echoes comments made earlier this week by leading North Sea gas producer Neptune Energy who said it could have produced approximately 10.7 billion cubic extra feet of gas last year if restrictions had been lowered.
