Angela Eagle claims government’s ‘culture war’ is ‘encouraging’ hate crime spike
Labour MP Angela Eagle claimed via Twitter this afternoon that: “The Govt’s ‘culture war’ is encouraging the rise in hate crimes.”
Her tweet quoted a post from Ben Hunte, a senior reporter at the online magazine Vice News, in which he linked to an exclusive report in which he wrote that Freedom of Information request obtained by the publication, said that “homophobic hate crimes have risen by 210 percent over the last six years, while over the same period transphobic hate crime reports rose by 332 per cent.”
Ms Eagle is herself a member of the LGBTQ+ community, having publicly come out as a lesbian during a newspaper interview in September 1997, the second MP to do so after Maureen Colquhoun in 1973.
