Ban: ‘We must not draw back’

Ban Ki-Moon, the UN secretary general, comments on the progress of the Millennium Development Goals, and argues for a renewed commitment to their achievement by 2015:

“We brought new urgency to an age-old mission. Now we have real results… we have more development success stories than ever before.

“The transformative impact of the MDG is undeniable.

“Being true (to the MDGs) means supporting the vulnerable despite the economic crisis,

“We should not balance budgets on the backs of the poor. We must not draw back from official developmental assistance, a lifeline of billions for billions.”
