Butler calls on the BBC to continue local output

In a Westminster Hall speech, Conservative MP Rob Butler called on the BBC to follow its charter and ensure that it continues local coverage in the Oxford and Cambridge area.

The former BBC broadcaster reminded MPs of the BBC’s duty to “provide news, to build peoples understanding of all parts of the UK and offer material not widely available from other UK news providers”.

The final point is key, with the BBC planning to stop local television in Oxford and Cambridge, moving coverage online.
