McPartland, Stephen

Stephen McPartland was first elected as the Conservative MP for Stevenage in 2010 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 8,562.

The constituency of Stevenage is a compact constituency based around the Hertfordshire New Town of Stevenage, and the neighbouring villages of Knebworth, Codicote and Datchworth.  The constituency has a large commuter population that travel by train into London as well as a large base for the pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline.

Stevenage is one of the UK’s longest standing marginal seats and has been won by the government of the day at every General Election since 1983.  The motor racing driver, Lewis Hamilton, grew up in Stevenage, controversially remarking in 2018 that it was his family’s dream to ‘get out of the slums’.

McPartland served briefly as Minister of State at the Home Office (Minister for Security) under Boris Johnson between July and September 2022.

McPartand was born in Liverpool in 1976 and attended the University of Liverpool. Prior to being elected an MP, he was the Director of Membership for British American Business (the US Chamber of Commerce).

According to the Register of Members Interests, he serves as a Non Executive Director of the retailer Furniture Village.

McPartland supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum, and backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

McPartland has previously led a campaign to protect leaseholders from the bills they face for remediating historic fire safety costs. The McPartland-Smith amendments are named after him.

He is interested in welfare issues and has been particularly critical of Conservative welfare reforms in the past, including the way that Universal Credit has been introduced.

Stephen McPartland  is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Bingo; and the East Coast Mainline.

He is married and supports Stevenage Town Football Club.
