Steve Tuckwell was elected as the Conservative MP for Uxbridge in a July 2023 by-election with a majority of 495 votes. The by-election was caused following the resignation of the former prime minister, Boris Johnson, from Westminster.
The constituency of Uxbridge is located on the north western outskirts of London in the London Borough of Hillingdon at the end of the metropolitan underground line. Although this has been a safe Conservative seat, one which was one by the party in the Labour landslide year of 1997, this area of London was thought to have become slightly more marginal in recent years. Nonetheless, aided by local opposition to plans to extend the ULEZ scheme to this part of London, Mr Tuckwell narrowly managed to retain this seat in July 2023. The seat contains the campus of Brunel University.
Prior to being elected to Westminster, Steve Tuckwell worked as a manager for Royal Mail. In his earlier years, Mr Tuckwell was a postman himself. He was educated at Bishop Ramsey School in Ruislip and has lived in Hillingdon all his life.
Mr Tuckwell was elected to Hillingdon Council in 2018. He has served as Hillingdon’s Mental Health Champion. He is also a Community Governor for Ruislip High School and has served as Chairman of the Local Scout Group.
Mr Tuckwell was aged 54 at the time of his election to Westminster. He has two children.
