Nici, Lia

Lia Nici is‌ ‌the Conservative‌ MP‌ ‌for‌ Great Grimsby,‌ ‌having‌ ‌first‌ ‌been‌ ‌elected‌ ‌to‌ ‌Parliament‌ ‌in‌ 2019, gaining the seat from Labour with a majority of 7,331.

Located in the north east of Lincolnshire on the coast, Grimsby is the centre of the UK’s fish processing industry and still retains an active port. In the 2016 EU referendum, it was one of the strongest supporting Brexit areas with 71.4% backing Leave.   Prior to 2019, Grimsby had been held by the Labour Party in every election since the Second World War, and was once represented by the Labour Foreign Secretary, Tony Crossland.

Nici was appointed an Assitant Government Whip in September 2022.  She was not reappointed to the government when Rishi Suank became prime minister in October 2022.

She was briefly the Under Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities between July and September 2022.  Nici served as one of four Parliamentary Private Secretaries to Boris Johnson between February and July 2022.

Born‌ ‌in 1969, Lia ‌Nici was born in Grimsby and studied at Huddersfield University.  For many years she worked‌ as a lecturer in media studies and as Head of Grimsby Institute’s ‘East Coast Media’.

Before moving into teaching, she helped produce the TV programme, Byker Grove.  She has also worked as an Executive Producer at Estuary TV, a Grimsby-based Community Interest company.

A former parish councillor, she was elected to North East Lincolnshire Council in 2018.

Nici is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Albania, the Faroe Islands, the Isle of Man, Italy, Montenegro, Fisheries, and Hydrogen.

She is married with a son, and has a stated interest in the history of music halls.
