Michael Fabricant was first elected as the Conservative MP for Lichfield in 1992, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 23,638.
The constituency of Lichfield is found in the south east of Staffordshire, and covers the small cathedral city of Lichfield, the former mining town of Burntwood, and a number of surrounding villages.  Although the Conservatives hung on here by just 238 votes in 1997, the party has re-established its dominance in recent years and attracted close to two thirds of the vote here in 2019. The seat contains a relatively high proportion of retired voters and owner occupancy is above the national average.
Michael Fabricant previously served as an Opposition spokesman on Trade, as a government whip, and as Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party.

Fabricant has been critical of the HS2 rail line. Â And he previously led a Parliamentary campaign to lift the ban on gay men being able to give blood.
One of Parliament’s more colourful MPs, he has previously suggested that had he not been a Tory MP he may have voted for Tony Blair in the 1997 General Election.
He backed Michael Gove in the 2019 Conservative party leadership election. He previously voted against John Major and Theresa May in no confidence votes, but remained supportive of Boris Johnson after the ‘partygate’ affair.
In the spring of 2022, he apologised for suggesting teachers and nurses enjoyed a “quiet drink” in staff rooms during lockdown.
Michael Fabricant is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Waterways; and North Macedonia. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Woods and Trees; and Albania.
Michael Fabricant defends working from home in bid to encourage ‘TWaTism’
Born in 1950, Michael Fabricant has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Law from Loughborough University, and a Master of Science degree in Operations Research from the University of Sussex.
Fabricant undertook postgraduate doctoral research in Economics and Econometrics at Oxford, London University, and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Prior to his election to Parliament, he was a Senior Director and Co-founder of an international broadcast manufacturing and management group. The company sold electronics equipment to foreign radio stations  Fabricant also previously worked as a radio broadcaster in news and current affairs.
He lists his interests as fell walking, canal boating, listening to the Omnibus edition of the Archers, and eating out. Fabricant is good friends with the Midlands Mayor, Andy Street.
Fabricant is well known for his distinctive hair. In his youth, he was a sprinter. He speaks French and German, and Dutch.
