Margaret Greenwood was first elected as the Labour MP for Wirral West in 2015, gaining the seat from the Conservative Esther McVey in a result that bucked the national trend. Greenwood was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 3,003.
As its name suggests, Wirral West is found on the more prosperous west hand side of the Wirral peninsula and contains the town of West Kirby and the seaside resort of Hoylake.  Although gained by Labour between 1997, this had been a traditional Conservative seat, held by David Hunt, the Conservative Cabinet Minister under John Major.
Greenwood previously served in the Shadow Cabinet under Jeremy Corbyn as Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.
Born in 1959, Margaret Greenwood worked as an English teacher across secondary schools, further education colleges and adult education centres in Wirral and Liverpool, before being elected to Parliament. She is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Adult Education.
Greenwood was a founder member of Defend our NHS, a Merseyside-based campaign group which was originally formed in 2011 to oppose the Health and Social Care Bill.
Considered to be on the left of the Labour Party, she supported Rebecca Long Bailey in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
Greenwood is also a former travel writer.
