Fysh, Marcus

Marcus Fysh was first elected as the Conservative MP for Yeovil in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 16,181.

Yeovil was a long time Liberal Democrat seat having been held by the party consistently between 1983 and 2015, including by the party’s former Leader, Paddy Ashdown. Found towards the south of the County of Somerset, the constituency includes the towns of Yeovil, Chard, and Illminster.   The local economy is dominated by light industry and defence including Honeywell Aerospace and BAE Systems. 59% of the electorate supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

Fysh was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for International Trade in September 2022 by Liz Truss.  He was not reappointed to the government when Rishi Suank became prime minister in October 2022.

Born in 1970 in Australia, Marcus Fysh moved to the UK when he was three.  He was educated at Winchester College, before reading literature at Oxford University.

After leaving university, Marcus Fysh worked in the City for Mercury Asset Management, before setting up his own business focused on growth opportunities in the Asia Pacific region, Europe and UK.

The Register of Members Interests shows him to be a shareholder in two investment companies, West Sea Investments Ltd (formerly London Wessex Ltd): and Samfire Proprietary Ltd (formerly Wessex Investments Proprietary Ltd).

He served on South Somerset District Council between 2011 and 2015, and on Somerset County Council between 2013 and 2015.

Positioned on the right of the Conservative Party, Fysh supported Leave in the 2016 Brexit referendum, voted against Theresa May’s Brexit deal, and supported Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

In 2019, Fysh was one of the few MPs to vote against LGBT inclusive sex and relationship education in English schools.
