Sturdy, Julian

Julian Sturdy was first elected as the Conservative MP for York Outer in 2010, being reelected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 9,985.

The constituency of York Outer encircles the city of York like a doughnut.  It includes the communities of Huntingdon, Haxby, Clifton, Rawcliffe and Heslington. The University of York is found in this constituency.  It a relatively safe Conservative constituency with the Conservative Party polling close to 50% of the vote, since 2015.

Born in 1971, Julian Sturdy attended Harper Adams Agricultural College.   He is a Yorkshire farmer from Wetherby, who remains a partner in the family farming business, G E Sturdy and Son.

Sturdy served as a councillor on Harrogate Borough Council from 2002 to 2007

In 2015, he introduced a bill in Parliament make it easier for the owners of horses to dispose of their animals (the Control of Horses Act).

He is married to Victoria and the couple have two children.  According to the Register of Members Interests, he employs his wife as a part time secretary.

His father was once a Conservative Member of the European Parliament.

Sturdy supported Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative leadership election.

On his website, Sturdy describes himself as being known for calling a ‘spade a spade’.

Julian Sturdy is the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Rural Business and the Rural Powerhouse; Antibiotics; and Science and Technology in Agriculture. He is the Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Equipment for Disabled Children; Family Business; Pharmacy; Uplands and Hill Farming.
