Gregory Campbell has been the DUP MP for Londonderry East since 2001, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 9,607.
The East Londonderry constituency is found in the north west corner of Northern Ireland and contains Coleraine and Limavady. The Unionist majority in this part of Northern Ireland is said to account for around two thirds of voters. The seat was gained by the DUP from the UUP back in 2001 and has been held comfortably by the party ever since.
Born in 1953, Campbell was raised in Derry’s Waterside area and was educated at the city’s technical college and the University of Ulster. He worked as a civil servant, and then as a Director of the Publisher’s Causeway Press before being elected to Westminster.
He joined the DUP in the 1970s and was elected to Derry City Council between 1981 and 2011. Campbell briefly led the local DUP members out of the Council in 1984 when the council changed its name from Londonderry to Derry City Council, although he returned to his seat not long after.
Campbell is known for his socially conservative views. He was a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly between 1998 and 2016.
He is married with four children. He employs his wife, Frances Campbell, as a part-time Secretary.
