Brady, Graham

Graham Brady was first elected as the Conservative MP for Altrincham and Sale West in 1997, having been reelected in 2019 with a majority of 6,139.

The constituency of Altrincham and Sale West is found towards the south of the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in the south western corner of Greater Manchester on the border with Cheshire.  It contains the towns of Altrincham, Hale, Sale, and Timperley. With the area known as being the home to a number Premier League footballers, parts of this constituency are some of the most affluent areas in England outside London.  There is a notable Jewish community in this constituency.

A safe Conservative seat, during the early Blair years, it was previously the only area of Greater Manchester that was held by the Conservatives.  Compared to the wider national picture, in recent years, this seat has looked less safe than might have been expected, notably as the Lib Dem vote has collapsed with the Labour party being the prime beneficiary.

Brady has been the long standing Chairman of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbench MPs, having held the post since 2010.  In July 2021, he was reelected to the position despite a challenge from rival MP, Heather Wheeler.

In March 2019 he announced that he planned to stand down from Westmisnter at the next general election.

He was briefly a candidate for the Conservative leadership in 2019, but failed to muster sufficient support to make it to the ballot.

Brady was born in Salford in 1967. He was educated at Altrincham Grammar School and Durham University where he studied law.

Prior to his election in 1997, when he became the youngest Conservative MP at that time, he was Public Affairs Director of the Waterfront Partnership. He had previously worked at the Centre for Policy Studies and Shandwick Plc.

Graham Brady is married to Victoria whom he met at university and has two grown up children. According to the Register of Members Interests, Brady employs his wife as as Senior Parliamentary Assistant.

Graham Brady  is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Sustainable Aviation; Thailand; and the Cayman Islands. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Vietnam; the British Museum; Dark Skies; Spinal Cord Injury; Wine and Spirits; Bahrain; Belize; British Overseas Territories; Greece; Japan; Kazakhstan; and Singapore.
