Cox, Geoffrey

Geoffrey Cox was first elected as the Conservative MP for Torridge and West Devon in 2005, being re-elected in 2019 with a majority of 24,992.

The Devon West and Torridge constituency is a large rural seat that spreads down much of Devon’s border with Cornwall.  It includes the towns of Bideford, Great Torrington, Holsworthy, and Tavistock.  In the north this constituency contains the island of Lundy as well as the seaside resort of Westward Ho!  The local economy is heavily influenced by farming, food processing, and tourism. Home ownership rates are high. Although represented by the Liberal Democrats between 1997 and 2005, this has since become a safe Conservative seat again.

Sir Geoffrey Cox served as Attorney General in the government between 2018 and 2020, doing so at the height of the Brexit battles in Parliament.

Born in 1960, Cox was educated at Downing College Cambridge.  He is a QC and was a successful barrister before entering Parliament, having founded his own barristers’ chambers, Thomas More International Ltd.

Cox also owns farmland in Devon and is a member of the National Farmers Union.

For a number of years, his legal work, which he practised alongside sitting in Parliament, was reported to make him the highest earning MP. The Register of Members Interests in 2021 showed signs that this trend was returning, with him working as a Consultant Global Counsel to Withers LLP.  The level of his outside earnings attracted attention following the lobbying scandal that engulfed the former Conservative MP, Owen Patterson, in late 2021.

Cox is a powerful orator who is known for his deep voice.  He supported Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

He enjoys reading, walking with his dogs, and swimming.  He married with three children. He is a practising member of the Church of England.
