Crosbie, Virginia

Virginia Crosbie is‌ ‌the‌ Conservative MP‌ ‌for Ynys Môn,‌ otherwise known as the Isle of Anglesey, having gained the seat off the Labour Party in 2019 with a majority of 1,968.

‌Yns Mons includes the towns of Holyhead, Llangefni and Beaumaris, and has traditionally been one of the UKs most tightly fought marginal seats having previously been won by the Conservatives between 1979 and 1987, Plaid Cymru between 1987 and 2001, and the Labour Party between 2001 and 2019.  Anglesey always has very tight fought electoral battles, and the Conservative Party narrowly regained the seat in 2019.  Voters in this north Welsh island, were almost exactly evenly split about Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

Ms Crosbie was previously a PPS at the Welsh Office but resigned in July 2022 in protest at Boris Johnson continuing to remain as prime minister.

Born in 1966, Virginia Crosbie ‌studied microbiology at Queen Mary University of London before completing a diploma in management studies at the University of Westminster‌.‌  She worked as a pharmaceutical analyst at the bank UBS, before moving to further management roles at Glaxo, and HSBC.

Crosbie then retrained, and became a mathematics teacher, ‌before‌ ‌being‌ ‌elected‌ ‌to‌ Parliament.‌ ‌

Crosbie has attracted media attention for working as a dolphin trainer in her youth. She also appeared on the BBC children’s show, Animal Magic.   She is now a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Zoos and Aquariums.

In 2020, she was involved in an incident where she picked up a constituent who had broken down by the roadside in a storm. The constituent it turned out, had previously been extremely active in attacking Crosbie on social media, and after the incident, the constituent admitted that she felt bad about her previous online behaviour.

Crosbie has committed to learn the welsh language.

Virginia Crosbie is married with three children.  She is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on the Celtic Nations, Dark Skies, Cycling and Walking, Hospitality and Tourism, Marine Energy, Outdoor Learning, Women and Enterprise, and UK Islands.
