Charalambous, Bambos

Bambos Charalambous is the Labour MP for Enfield Southgate, having first been elected to Parliament in 2017. He was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 4,450 over the Conservatives.

Enfield Southgate is found on the northern edge of London, and includes Cockfosters at the end of the Piccadilly Line.  Found on the western side of Enfield, it incorporate affluent areas around Hadley Wood as well as the Labour voting area of Palmers Green.   An ethnically diverse constituency with notable Jewish, Muslim and Cypriot communities, this seat is famous as having once been represented in Parliament by the former Conservative cabinet Minister, Michael Portillo.  Having briefly been won back by the Conservatives between 2005 and 2015, Labour has won here in the last three elections.

In June 2023, Bambos Charalambous lost the Labour whip at Westminster, having been suspended by the party, whilst it investigated a complaint about his conduct.

Charalambous was appointed to the Shadow Foreign Affairs team in December 2021.  He previously served as the shadow Minister for Crime reduction and Courts and as an Opposition Whip.

He supported Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election, despite previously having served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary, to Starmer’s then rival in the contest, Rebecca Long Bailey.

Born in  London in 1967, Bambos Charalambous was raised in Bowes Park.  He was educated at Liverpool John Moores University reading law.  He worked as a solicitor before being elected to Parliament, and was a housing lawyer for Hackney Council.

Elected to Enfield Council between 2014 and 2018, Charalambous is said to be the first Member of Parliament of full Cypriot descent.  He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cyprus.

He is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Alevis, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Breast Cancer, Equipment for Disabled Children, Future Generations, and Thalassaemia.
