Monaghan, Carol

Carol Monaghan was elected as SNP MP for Glasgow North West in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 8,359.

The constituency of Glasgow North West lies on the north bank of the Clyde. A mixed constituency which includes the Drumchapel housing estate as well as more affluent suburbs of Jordanhill and Scotstoun, the seat was previously represented at Westminster by the fast talking veteran Labour MP, Donald Dewar.

At Westminster, Carol Monaghan is the SNP spokesperson on Education, Armed Forces and Veterans.

Born in 1972, Carol Monaghan studied at Strathclyde University, graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Laser Physics and Optoelectronics in 1993.  She worked as a physics teacher and head of science at Hyndland Secondary School before becoming an MP.  She has three children.

In 2019, Monaghan was forced to move to a police safehouse after being on the receiving line of a number of threats, which also saw her constituency office having its windows smashed and covered in ketchup.  She has called for social media companies to take greater action to stop misogynistic abuse.

Carol Monaghan is the Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Aerospace, Artificial Intelligence, the Armed Forces Covenant, Space, Greenland, Technology and National Security, University, Veterans, the Internet, Communications and Technology, and Ship Building and Ship Repair.

She is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), and on Photonics and Quantum.
