Alex Burghart is the Conservative Party MP for Brentwood and Ongar having first been elected to Parliament in 2017. He was reelected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 29,065 over the Labour Party.
The Essex constituency of Brentwood and Ongar sits around the M25 in the Essex, bordering north east London. It contains the small towns of Brentwood, Shenfield, West Horndon and Ongar. This is prime London commuting territory and this seat has been held by the Conservatives ever since it was first created in 1974.
Burghart was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Cabinet Office in October 2022. He was briefily a junior mnister at the Department of Work and Pensions under Liz Truss between September and October 2022.
He was previously Under Secretary at the Department of Education in 2021, but resigned in July 2022 claiming he no longer had confidence in the leadership of Boris Johnson. This was despite, Burghart previously serving as PPS to Boris Johnson between 2019 and 2021.
Born in 1977, Alex Burghart was educated at Oxford University. He also has a PhD in history from Kings College London. Alex worked as a history teacher and university lecturer before being elected to Parliament.
Burghart worked at the Department for Education on the Munro Review of Child Protection, before spending four years as Director of Policy at the Centre for Social Justice.
Between 2016 and 2017 he was Special Adviser to Prime Minister, Theresa May on social policy in 10 Downing Street.
Alex Burghart is married with two children. Between 2019 and 2021 he was Non-Executive Director of the New Scientist Ltd.
Burghart is a boxing fan, and is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Boxing.
