4:27pm – Over half have noticed food shortages

According to the latest YouGov poll, 56% of Britons have now noticed food shortages in their local shops/supermarkets. This has risen from 45% in mid August, and 36% in late July.

Brexit has proved to be a huge issue for supply chains, with Wetherspoon’s Tim Martin admitting yesterday that there was a beer shortage.

3:30pm – Corbyn WILL be allowed to attend

Well that story solved itself quickly. The Guardian’s political editor writes that she’s been told by Labour sources that: “He *will* be granted a pass, and can address fringe meetings at the main Brighton conference venue.”

2:48pm – Corbyn could be barred from Labour party conference

The Guardian are reporting that former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn could be barred from attending the Labour party conference in Brighton later this month.

Labour sources said “no decision has yet been made”, but Richard Burgon said: ““He is a Labour member: he should be entitled to attend any meeting in the conference zone.”

1:51pm – Hunt warns about US/UK tension

Ex-foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has warned that the Afghanistan withdrawal could result in tension between the US and UK.

He also said: “The result of this chaotic, hurried withdrawal has been to hand a country back to the very government that sheltered the 9/11 bombers”.

1:20pm – Raab: We must engage with Taliban

Foreign secretary Dominic Raab has said during his trip to Doha that we must “engage” with the Taliban.

He said that the UK would not recognise the Taliban as leaders of Afghanistan for the “foreseeable future” but that we should “adjust to the new reality”.

  • The Guardian: Foreign office warned of rapid takeover by Taliban – Dominic Raab’s grilling is the focus of many papers. The Guardian highlights a risk assessment from the foreign office which indicated they knew Afghanistan would fall a month before it did.
  • i: UK cabinet ministers at war in Afghan blame game – The i looks at the “war” between several cabinet ministers over who is to blame for Afghanistan, with defence secretary Ben Wallace and Raab blaming each other for the slow withdrawal.
  • The Daily Telegraph: Third jab for vulnerable – but no mass rollout yet – The Telegraph says that while booster jabs will be available for the most vulnerable, the government is waiting to see whether a wider rollout is required.
  • Financial Times: UK draws up plan to shift Trident subs abroad if Scotland secedes – The FT reports that the UK has a contingency plan to move its nuclear submarine bases in Scotland away from the country and to the US or France in case Scotland were to go independent.
