NASUWT urges UK government to follow Wales’s lead on free school meals

Commenting on the Welsh Government’s pledge to provide free school meals for every primary pupil in Wales by 2024, Dr Patrick Roach, General Secretary of the NASUWT – The Teachers’ Union, said:

“We are delighted the Welsh Government is taking this positive step towards supporting families and ensuring that all primary pupils will receive free, healthy school meals so they can concentrate on their learning.

“We urge the UK Government to show the same degree of concern about the impact that the cost of living crisis is having on children – its recent paltry increase to the funding rate for universal infant free school meals in England will have little impact.

“The NASUWT has been calling for the expansion of free schools meals funding and eligibility across the UK for some time and we will not stop while children and young people are still going hungry in the classroom.”
