Make UK comment on Queen’s Speech

Commenting on the Queen’s speech, Verity Davidge, Director of Policy at Make UK, said:

“While industry will welcome some elements of the speech, the Energy and Levelling-Up Bills in particular, it was notable as much for what it didn’t contain which would indicate that political priorities took centre stage. In particular, Business will be frustrated that, yet again, three years after having promised it there was no Employment Bill. This is a major omission given how fast the world of work is changing, a trend accelerated by the pandemic. In addition, the absence of a Planning Bill was a missed opportunity to look at the alternative forms of housing the Country urgently needs. The focus now for all of Government must be how to deliver sustained growth the economy urgently needs.”

Commenting on the Queen’s Speech, Steve Cole, Head of Make UK Modular said:

“Today was a missed opportunity to set in stone the role of Modular housing as an integral pillar of the Government’s Planning reforms. Too often existing planning prejudices poor quality traditional building methods over high-quality precision engineered modular homes. If the Government wants to deliver the new homes the country so badly, we needed to see urgent Planning reforms. Even the Energy Security Bill has a lack of reference to housing and construction. At these critical times, we should immediately move to higher energy performance standards for all new build from 2025 could save billions in additional energy costs”
