General election 2010: Teather gives Lib Dems reason to cheer

The Liberal Democrats have stormed to victory over Labour in Brent Central this morning.

On a disappointing night for the Lib Dems Sarah Teather gave them reason to cheer with victory over labour’s Dawn Butler.

Ms Teather won 20,026 votes after a massive 11% swing from Labour who won 18,681 votes.

Sachin Rajput, the Conservative candidate, trailed in third with 111.2% of the vote share.

Ms Teather said: “I’m absolutely shattered. I don’t remember when I was last in bed”.

But she refused to be drawn on who her party should support in the hung parliament, she said “I’d like to get some sleep”.

The constituency has been created by joining Brent East and Brent South with their central wards merged into the new Brent Central constituency.

The Conservatives are the largest party and Nick Clegg made a clear statement this morning stating that he believed they had first right to form a government.
