Saudi terror alert

Britons considering travel to Saudi Arabia are being warned of “credible” reports of planned terror attacks, including against westerners in the kingdom.

The foreign office has published a newly updated notice on its website warning of the “high threat of terrorism” in the kingdom.

Anyone wishing to travel to Saudi Arabia should have confidence in their “individual security arrangements” and must maintain a “high level of vigilance”, the notice states.

All non-essential staff and their dependents have been told they may leave the country.

There have been a number of terrorist incidents in Saudi Arabia over the last two years. In 2003, suicide bombers with suspected al-Qaeda links killed 35 in the capital, Riyadh.

Despite the success the Saudi security forces have had recently in clamping down on terrorist activity, the foreign office now believes this may lead to “opportunistic attacks on western targets” as the terror networks are disrupted.
