Windsor Castle to go green

Windsor castle will be powered by green energy following the local council’s approval of a hydroelectric power plant nearby.

The £1 million four-turbine plant will generate 200 kilowatts of electricity, which will be fed directly to the castle and not into the local grid.

A spokesman for the Queen said she was always keen to find ways to save energy. “We’re constantly looking at ways of saving energy. We use energy efficient light bulbs at Buckingham Palace and recycle 99 per cent of green waste,” he said

Friends of the Earth director Tony Juniper welcomed the news, saying the organisation was “delighted” the Queen was taking a lead in the use of green energy.

Mr Juniper said it highlighted the potential for green energy in the country. “Most homes wouldn’t use hydroelectricity, but they could install solar panels or small wind turbines instead.”
