Straw condemns Egypt bombings

Foreign secretary Jack Straw has condemned the bombings in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Mr Straw, speaking on behalf of the EU presidency, called the attacks “despicable and evil” and offered condolences to families of victims of the attacks.

The attacks ripped through the popular resort killing approximately 88 people and injuring around 200 – although reports in the media suggest the death toll has been revised down.

“The EU condemns the terrorist attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh and Naama Bay on 23rd July. I send our condolences and sympathies to the families of all the victims caught up in this terrible attack,” Mr Straw said.

The foreign secretary praised the work of Egyptian rescue services and pledged full support to Egypt.

“These despicable and evil attacks against innocent people on holiday only deepens our resolve to defeat terrorism and ensure that respect for civilised values prevails,” he said
