Campaigners mark anniversary of Soho nail bombing

Lesbian and gay organisations are marking the anniversary of the Soho nail bombing by urging London’s gay community to vote against far right groups.

On 30 April 1999, a nail bomb planted by one-time BNP member David Copeland exploded in the Admiral Duncan pub in Old Compton Street at the heart of London’s gay community, killing three people.

It followed two previous explosions in Brixton and Brick Lane, which were also the result of Copeland’s handiwork – part of a campaign intended to spark a race hate war.

On Saturday – the sixth anniversary of the Admiral Duncan bombing – the Lesbian and Gay Coalition Against Racism, the South East Region TUC LGBT Network will be on Old Compton Street distributing leaflets urging a vote against right-wing groups at the general election.

Copeland is serving six life sentences. He insisted he was acting alone and his attacks were not politically motivated.
