Plaid backs local food production

Plaid Cymru has marked environment week with a plea to shoppers and governments to support local food production.

And, it attacked Labour for failing to make the environment a priority this election.

Policy director Simon Thomas, said: “The most vital task is to get shoppers and governments to support local producers. Shipping in food over long distances from unsustainable farming practices destroys local jobs and the world environment. I want government and local authorities to send a clear message in their purchasing policies – Buy Local, Buy Welsh, Buy Organic and Buy British wherever possible”.

He stressed though that Plaid did not want to see an end to food sourced from other countries being made available, quipping: “I love bananas, but I don’t want to see Wales under climate change become a banana growing area.”
