New junior doctor training curriculum

Communication with patients and teamwork are to be explicitly highlighted in junior doctors’ training.

The inclusion of such skills alongside traditional medical training is part of a major shake-up of junior doctors’ training.

There will now be a two-year structured course involving placements across a range of specialities, specific skill assessment and educational supervisors to oversee each trainee.

Chief Medical Officer for England Sir Liam Donaldson said: “This is very much a ‘curriculum for patient safety’, ensuring that at the end of their two years of training doctors are both confident and competent and we are delighted that the UK is leading the world in innovations in medical education.”
