Greenpeace dumps dead dolphins on DEFRA

Environmental campaign group Greenpeace today dumped three dead dolphins on the doorstep of the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs in London.

Greenpeace is angry that the dolphins were probably killed by fishing nets, and accused the department of trying to side-step the issue – known as dolphin bycatch.

It says that pair trawling in the English Channel kills “unacceptably high” numbers of dolphins each year.

Fisheries Minister Ben Bradshaw said the latest figures showed the stranding of dolphins and porpoises fell dramatically compared with last year.

He said: “Greenpeace knows that most bycatch of dolphins occurs in international waters and the overwhelming majority of effort in the pair trawl fishery is French. They would be better taking action to raise awareness in France. This silly stunt is a waste of Greenpeace’s supporters’ money.”
