Yeo – Time to think about compensation from the French

Shadow Transport Secretary Tim Yeo has said it is time for the Government to explore the possibility of getting compensation from the French government for disruption at Dover caused by French strikes.

The French unions have called a one-day general strike today in protest at their government’s plans for economic reform – including reform of the 35-hour working week.

Mr Yeo said: “This is the latest example of what’s been an ongoing problem. Strike action in France imposes a cost on British businesses and disrupts transport, particularly in East Kent.

“The police time needed to supervise Operation Stack means there is a public cost as well. It’s time the Government raised this issue with the French authorities including the possibility of compensation for costs arising directly from this disruption.”
