Libya to sign up to Additional Protocol

Libya will allow on the spot United Nations nuclear arms inspections and abide by stricter nuclear safeguards, according to a Vienna-based Western diplomat.

The unnamed diplomat said: “The Libyans confirmed they want to sign the Additional Protocol in their meeting with ElBaradei.”

Libyan officials pledged to allow inspectors into the country during a meeting with Mohammed el Baradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog.

The announcement comes two days after Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi said he would work with the UN to dismantle his covert nuclear weapons programme.

Tripoli has pledged to destroy its chemical and biological weapons.

Libya will also sign the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the diplomat said.
