London is western world’s top terror target
London is the western city most at risk of terrorist bombings according to a new report.
The Control Risks Group has warned that the UK’s involvement in the Iraq war has raised its profile as an American ally, and this is believed to have increased the threat of Islamic terrorism.
While the report suggests the war in Iraq has made the UK a more likely target than other European countries, the fact that the UK has only one politically significant city, compared to several in the USA, is believed to put London at greater risk than any one US city.
It is believed that any attack would be made by an individual suicide bomber, wearing explosives, or in the form of a car bomb.
London is the only city in the Western world not to be ranked as a ‘low risk’ location for terrorist attacks, which is also the classification given to the UK as a whole. However, it is still only classified as in the second lowest group, while higher groups include countries like Columbia and Liberia.
The report also reassures companies that they should still feel confident doing business in Europe and North America, despite the ongoing terrorist threat.
Londoners have been warned before that their city is at risk, and the report notes its large Muslim population as a possible reason for concern. This is especially significant following recent terrorist activity in Israel involving British Muslims.
However, the same report considers it unlikely that dissident Irish republican groups such as the Real IRA are still capable of such actions. These groups have been responsible for the most recent bombings in the capital.
