Libya and France agree compensation deal
Libya and the French government have agreed a compensation deal for the 1989 UTA bombing.
No details about the financial package have yet been released, but the deal should lead to the dropping of UN sanctions against Libya.
Sanctions had been suspended against Libya after they agreed to hand two men suspected of the Lockerbie bombing. However the dispute over compensation for UTA flight which killed 170 people, has delayed a formal end.
The French relatitives had received $33mn from Libya, but they demanded more compensation after Libya paid $2.7bn for the downing of a Pan am flight over Lockerbie.
A vote in the Security Council on ending the sanctions is now expected within the next week or so.
