A new poll has found over 50% of voters believe Tony Blair’s government doctored the dossier on Iraq’s lethal weaponry.

Only 6% of respondents considered the government more trustworthy than the BBC, with 34% finding the BBC more believable.

And 68% believed the government had treated Dr David Kelly “unfairly.” A mere 8% said the government had treated Dr Kelly dispassionately.

Dr Kelly was the Iraqi weapons expert, who apparently killed himself after being named as the MoD “mole” in BBC allegations that Downing Street “sexed up” the case for war.

But there is some cheer for No 10 in the latest survey. Labour’s lead over the Conservatives has risen two points over the past month. 37% of the interviewees said they would vote Labour, compared with 32% for the Tories and 22% for the Liberal Democrats.

ICM telephoned a random sample of 1,001 adults aged 18 or older between 15-17 August 2003.
