Rooftop protest at Maghaberry Prison

Four prisoners last night staged a rooftop protest at a high security prison in county Antrim, Northern Ireland.

It is the second protest at the prison in recent months.

Three prisoners mounted the roof of Bush House in Maghaberry Prison near Lisburn; another prisoner climbed on Roe House’s roof.

A Prison Service spokesman said’ ‘At around 3.30 p.m. three prisoners got onto the roof of Bush House, and one prisoner climbed onto the roof of Roe House.

‘The incident is still ongoing.’

Republican prisoners want segregation from loyalist inmates.

The protest came days after Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Paul Murphy announced a review of safety at the jail.

John Steele, former head of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, will lead the consultation.
