Welsh economy minister outlines new restrictions from Boxing Day

Wales’ economy minister Vaughan Gething says it isĀ “entirely possible Omicron is the dominant variant in Wales”, as he outlined the Welsh government’s decision to impose new restrictions from Boxing Day.

From the 26th December, the rule of 6 will return for people meeting in pubs, cinemas and restaurants in Wales, and two-metre social distancing rules will also return in public spaces.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Gething said measures were needed to curb the spread and stop significant disruption to services, as large numbers of people begin to self-isolate.

Wales recorded its highest number of cases in a single day on Wednesday, with figures from Public Health Wales (PHW) showing 4,662 new cases.

The former Welsh health minister also told BBC Breakfast that London is “about a week ahead” of Wales in terms of the number of cases of Omicron.
