Shadow leader of the Commons says Rees-Mogg’s position is ‘untenable’

When pressed on Sky News’ “Trevor Phillips on Sunday”, shadow Leader of the House of Commons Thangam Debbonaire said if she were Rees-Mogg “I’d be considering my position”.

“I think his position is untenable,” Debbonaire says, adding that Boris Johnson should also “consider his position”.

Debbonaire also repeats the Labour party’s line that Owen Paterson should be ruled out of being recommended for a peerage.

Rees-Mogg is under pressure to resign his position as Leader of the House of Commons following the botched attempt to overturn the suspension of Owen Paterson, the former Tory minister accused of breaking Commons rules.

Chris Bryant, the chair of the Commons Standards Committee, has already stated that he thinks Rees-Mogg should go. “I personally think the Leader of the House’s position has become untenable”, Bryant told the i newspaper.
