Five people are reportedly injured following an alleged shooting and explosion in New York City this morning.

The incident occurred on the city’s subway network during rush hour in the Brooklyn suburb, south of Manhattan Island.

Police said they were alerted to reports of smoke on Brooklyn’s 36th Street and Fourth Avenue station near Sunset Park at around 8:30 am New York time, where they found several people with suspected gunshot wounds.

No information on a potential suspect has been released and the extent of injuries remains unclear.

The New York Times has since said police are seeking a man wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest wearing a dark blue outfit similar to that of a transit worker.

Once witness, Roddy Broke, took to Twitter to write that: “Either shots or a bomb went off at 36th Street. Scariest moment of my life, man.”
