‘Illiberal’ Covid passes won’t work, claims former minister

England’s vaccine passports set to be rolled out from Wednesday are illiberal and “won’t work” former Brexit Secretary David Davis has argued.

Plan B guidelines mandate the certification of vaccination or medical exemption at nightclubs, indoor settings with 500 plus attendees, outdoor settings with over 4,000 plus attendees, and any other venue with over 10,000 attendees.

The backbench MP told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme earlier this morning that  these passes  are “the real issue” with the Government’s Plan B legislation.

“It’s an illiberal requirement, not something we’ve historically done, requiring people to document their own medical status, but the other thing  and much more important in many ways is actually it won’t work,” he explained.

He argued: “It’s been tried in many countries in a number of ways… France from the summer, German states, Greece, Scotland, Wales, and they’ve all tried to validate that they’ve done it and it’s had an effect and none of it stands up.”

More than 70 Conservative MPs could vote against the government’s Plan B Coronavirus restrictions tomorrow, in what is set to be the largest rebellion since Boris Johnson entered Downing Street.

The proposals are set to pass however, as Labour MPs plan to back them.
