G20 fails to strike deal on curbing coal use

This weekend’s G20 summit in Rome ended yesterday evening without striking a comprehensive deal to phase out coal consumption.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres lamented: “I leave Rome with my hopes unfulfilled.”

The leaders of the world’s top 20 economies, agreed that global warming must be curbed to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Achieving net-zero emissions by around 2050 was also agreed on.

China and Russia had previously agreed to a goal of 2060.

However there was little in the way of firm agreement on how such measures would be achieved.
