Conservative MP tells government to ‘go back to the drawing board’ over tax hike

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed this morning in a joint article for The Sunday Times that the planned national insurance hike will go ahead in April despite a looming cost of living crisis.

Conservative MP for Harlow, Robert Halfon, has been outspoken in his criticism of the measure. Speaking to Sky New’s Trevor Phillips on Sunday show, Mr Halfon the government should “go back to the drawing board” and rethink how to raise funds.

He even appeared to back a Labour party policy proposal, which would introduce a windfall tax on big businesses such as oil companies, or even a raise on capital gains tax.
