Andrew Marr leaving the BBC so he can “get his voice back”

Andrew Marr has this afternoon announced that he is to leave the BBC in order “to get my own voice back”.

Mr Marr who has worked for the BBC for over 21 years, has hosted his ‘Andrew Marr Show’ for the past 16 years on BBC1 every Sunday morning.  He also presents Start the Week on Radio 4.  Marr formerly served as the BBC’s political editor.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Mr Marr said, “I think British political and public life are going to go through an even more turbulent decade, and as I’ve said, I am keen to get my voice back”.

Mr Marr is now joining Global Radio.  At the company he will present a new show for the Classic FM music station, as well as hosting an opinion led programme on LBC Radio.

In a statement released by Global, Mr Marr said, “Coming to Global gives me a new freedom – to do fast – paced, very regular political journalism on LBC with no filter, in entirely my own voice”.

Mr Marr, who was a very young Editor of the Independent newspaper in the 1990s, is also expected to start writing again for newspapers.

In reaction to his announcement on Twitter, people commenting on his feed immediately asked who it was, who was holding his voice back, asking what exactly he was saying ‘between the lines’.
